Nepal: UNICEF Nepal Humanitarian Situation Report 14, 10 June 2015

Highlights:

  • On 9 June, UNICEF, OCHA, WFP and UNHAS, teamed up with the Central Child Welfare Board (CCWB) and District Child Welfare (DCWB) to rescue 61 children stranded in a remote monastery in Gorkha District. The children were airlifted by helicopter to Durali, where UNICEF and the DCWB worked to register children and place them in a transit center.

  • UNICEF in partnership with Environment and Public Health Organization reached 2,106 people by installing a 30,000L bladder tank installed in Kamalamai municipality in Sindhuli District.

  • UNICEF has established 16 shelter homes for pregnant women, postnatal mothers and their newborns in 9 affected districts.

  • 438 Temporary Learning Centers (TLCs) have been established in 9 districts by UNICEF and its implementing partners.

  • A national polio immunization campaign was launched on 6 June targeting 2.8 million children aged below 5 in 27 districts, including the earthquake-affected districts.

  • UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has hailed the 16-point agreement signed by 4 major political of Nepal (i.e. Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist) and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik) on 8 June as “a major milestone” in the country’s democratic development. The deal has agreed to go for an 8-province model. It's also expected that a draft constitution will be ready by July. It will then need to be approved by a two-third majority in Parliament.
