SITUATION OVERVIEW
• On April 25th, at 11:41am local time, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors were felt across northern India and neighboring Bangladesh and Pakistan.
• On May 12th at 12:50 local time, a second earthquake struck with a magnitude of 7.3 causing further significant damage and further loss of life. Powerful aftershocks continued for hours, including 5.6 and 6.3 magnitude tremors with epicenters in Sindhupalchowk and Ramechhap districts. According to the Government, a total of 32 districts were affected, including those still recovering from the 25 April earthquake.
• Humanitarian agencies recorded cases of psychosocial trauma in affected communities. Additional mental health support services are needed. Coordination of debris management activities is reported to be an issue in all affected VDCs. This includes appropriate and safe demolition of destroyed or damaged structures.
• The monsoon season has contributed more hazards to the earthquake effected areas as was predicted. Since it began in June, 90 people have been killed, 38 have gone missing, and 48 have been injured with the majority of casualties occurring in the Kaski landslides in July and the Taplejung landslide in June. 40 cases of cholera have been recorded in the Kathmandu Valley and Nuwakot. Additionally, 117 houses, 9 bridges, and 1 school have been destroyed.
