Biophysical Indicators
The County received normal to below normal rainfall in the MarchApril-May rainy season which was fair to poor in both temporal and spatial distribution.
The current pasture and browse range from fair to poor in all species and parts of Agro pastoral Livelihood zone. However, the situation of pasture and browse declined significantly in Eldas, Buna district of Wajir North, Parts of Wajir West, Western Tarbaj and Wajir Bor area of Wajir East bordering Somalia.
The overall vegetation condition declined slightly, as shown by the 3-month VCI decline from a value of 36.88 to 33.46
The current state of water is at level 4 which is normal at this time of the year. There are few water pans still holding water in Wajir North.
Water trekking distances for households and livestock increased significantly due to drying of 60% of temporary water points. The current average households to watering points stand at 10.2 km compared to previous month of 6.7km. Grazing distances also increased significantly as pasture become scarce.
Socio-economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)
The current livestock body condition was fair to poor with a large proportion of livestock in all species livelihood zone being below normal. However camel body conditions remained good to fair.
Livestock market performed poorly compared to previous month.
The current ToT stands at 65 lower than previous month of 71.
Migration of livestock as a result of insecurity and insufficient pasture and water was on the rise in Wajir Wajir, Eldas, East and lower North area of Bun
Milk accessibility and availability was below normal. Milk price increased from an average of Kshs 80 per litre to 85 shillings, consequently reducing milk consumption at household levels.
