Highlights

During the reporting period the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated with clashes and fatal incidents recorded across the West Bank and Jerusalem, including five young Palestinians and four Israelis killed. In addition 106 Palestinians, including 37 children have been injured across the West Bank. Injuries and arrest have been reported in Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus and Ramallah.

 In Jerusalem the situation remains tense with clashes in East Jerusalem’s Old City and Beit Hanina. Three out of nine deaths occurred in the city, including an injured 2 year old Israeli toddler. Several Palestinian schools in the Jerusalem area cancelled classes on 5 October, citing safety concerns.

 On 6 September, a 32-year-old Palestinian woman died of wounds sustained on 31 July during an arson attack by suspected Israeli settlers in Nablus. This is the third fatality in the same family including the woman’s 18-month old baby and her husband.

 In September there were 14 houses demolished in the West Bank affecting 102 people including 52 children. In Gaza, during the weekend of 18 September, three rockets were fired towards Israeli territories. In retaliation, Israel launched air raids against the base of the military wing of Hamas, in northern Gaza. No casualties were reported.

 During the reporting period UNICEF rehabilitated 10 schools in some of the most vulnerable areas of the West Bank, in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

 UNICEF in partnership with Save Youth Future Society, has reached 1,000 adolescents across the Gaza Strip, with trainings on life skills, including critical thinking, innovation, cooperation and communication.

 Twenty six (26) schools and checkpoints in Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus, Jerusalem and Ramallah will be monitored during the 2015-16 school year as part of UNICEF’s protective accompaniment programme.
