Cholera in Hoima District:
A suspected outbreak was reported on 2/10/2015 to the DHO’s office from Nkondo village, Nkodo Parish, Kabwoya Sub-county in Hoima District. The Index case was a 63 year old woman who developed severe diarrhea, vomiting and general body weakness on 29th/09/2015 in Nkondo II. She is reported to have had visitors from Kyomya in Democratic Republic of Congo where there is an outbreak of cholera/dysentery. By 9th September, total of 58 suspected cases were treated at the treatment centre (Nkondo Catholic Church). The average age of patients was 14.3 years; 38 patients were aged 5 years or below (Figure 1, 2, 3). Four of 6 samples processed at CPHL were culture positive for Vibrio cholerae 01 Inaba.
Actions: 12 more samples have been collected and sent to CPHL for processing; a national rapid response team is already working with the district; to support outbreak response; medical supplies were taken to the CTC.
