Kenya: UNHCR Kenya Kakuma Operational Update, 1 - 14 October 2015

HIGHLIGHTS

  • As at 14 October 2015, Kakuma had received 46,728 asylum seekers from South Sudan. During the reporting period, 75 individuals were transported to the camp from Nadapal. As at 12 October, the total registered camp population was 182,352.

  • Humanitarian Aid and Development officials from the Embassy of Finland visited Kakuma on 09 October. The aim of the mission was to familiarize its humanitarian unit at the headquarters and the Embassy in Nairobi with the projects it funds through UNHCR and other partners in Kakuma. The mission was briefed by the office on the operation and development plans for the new Kalobeyei site. They were also briefed by WFP on the e-food voucher system and biometrics. They met with beneficiaries of the SGBV and WASH for People Living with Disabilities programmes.

  • On 12 October, officials from AAR Japan and Japan Platform met with UNHCR and IRC to co-sign documents for a paediatric ward that the Japanese organisations have jointly funded. The ward will be officially handed over to IRC which will manage the new 180 bed capacity hospital under construction in Kakuma 4.

  • Officials from the Tegla Lorupe Foundation were in Kakuma from 09 to 12 October. The foundation is in partnership with UNHCR to identify refugee athletes who will participate in the 2016 Rio Marathon. 17 refugee athletes were identified and will begin training to prepare for the event.
