There were 16 newly confirmed cases of Ebola this week, up from 13 last week. Eight cases were in Forécariah, three were in Kindia, two each in Dubréka and Conakry, and there was one in Boké. The two cases in the capital, both in Matoto, were the first since the week beginning 20 April 2015.
The total number of confirmed cases of Ebola rose to 3,239 this week, according to WHO’s Epidemiological Situation Report. The total number of confirmed, suspected and probable cases increased to 3,670. The number of confirmed deaths from Ebola rose to 2,018 with a total of 2,437 confirmed, suspected and probable deaths.
The latest 25-day Emergency Health Campaign focusing on active case detection started in Dubréka on 7 June 2015. The campaign, which centres on the sub prefecture of Tanéné where many of the recent cases of Ebola have originated, aims to reach 10,000 people. In the first day of the campaign, social mobilizers sensitized 2,720 people in 505 households about Ebola.
UNICEF continued its preparations to support Guinea’s Maternal and Child Health Week which is due to start on 11 June 2015. The campaign will focus on providing vaccinations to children under five who have so far missed out, and offer iron and folic acid supplements to pregnant and breastfeeding women to prevent anaemia.
UNICEF and partners continued to monitor how well Ebola safety protocols are being followed in schools. A visit to Dinguiraye prefecture showed that staff and pupils were following protocols properly but noted that there is a shortage of soap in some districts.
UNICEF supported the Regional Education Directorate in Kankan in establishing Ebola prevention committees in 408 schools, to make sure the disease does not return in places that are now Ebola free.
