Peace Race in Dadaab
- On 12th October, the world marathon champion Tegla Loroupe visited Dadaab refugee camps and met refugee athletes’ representatives in preparation for launching selection process of athletes for a training camp. Following her visit, best 50 female and male young refugee athletes from different nationalities competed in a race on 13th October. Girls were competing in a 5km race whilst as boys competed in a 10km race.
The girls race was won by an Ethiopians refugee girl followed by two South Sudanese on the second and third positions. The boys race was also won by an Ethiopian followed by two Somali refugees on the second and third positions.
The Peace Race was part of Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation initiative in partnership with UNHCR Kenya to support the refugee athletes from the camps. The selected winners will join their colleagues in camping in Nairobi. They will undergo training sessions and will be given chances to participate in various marathon competitions. Best athletes will be selected to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio in Brazil.
