Country: Haiti

Programme summary: Since the January 2010 earthquake, when 1.5 million Haitians were displaced from their homes, there has been a 94 percent decrease in the number of internally displaced persons and a 93 per cent reduction in the number of sites or camps still housing displaced populations.

Integrated Neighbourhood Approach (INA): Relocation and resettlement activities continued until the end of April 2014 and follow up on the relocated households also took place within this time period, which has enabled the IFRC to document lessons learned, good practices and to measure the value added by this programme to the targeted households. The IFRC Return-and-relocation projects have contributed considerably to the decrease in internally displaced persons (IDPs) sites.

The Haiti earthquake operation used 20 per cent of the total Red Cross funds to provide safe and improved shelter solutions to more than 44,000 households, including the completion of repairs and retrofit work for 168 damaged houses in the targeted neighbourhoods of Carrefour-Feuilles and Delmas. A total of 30,156 permanent reinforced concrete houses were built by the United States for International Development (USAID) and handed over to EPPLS1 . In addition, more than 91,000 households were reached with an increased availability of safe water through the rehabilitation and/or creation of water sources, and approximately 39,000 households have access to improved sanitation facilities.
