Summary of WFP assistance:

Trust Fund 200657 - With the objective of ensuring food and nutrition security of the population, WFP and the country's leading social protection programme “Progresando con Solidaridad”, (under the Vice Presidency’s Cabinet for Social Policy), have partnered since 2009. The project assists 121,706 individuals, including 88,348 children from 6 to 59 months, 23,665 pregnant and nursing women and 9,693 elderly adults. In addition, the programme also supports 20,000 government community employees and health practitioners through capacity development activities.

WFP provides a complete package of interventions including capacity development to community leaders and health practitioners, coordination amongst actors, community nutrition education and promotion of preventative care for children through primary healthcare. Through Ministry of Health practitioners, WFP provides:

Micronutrient Powders to 78,882 children between aged 6-59 months; the distribution of complementary nutritious foods (Supercereal Plus) to 9,466 children at risk of chronic or acute malnutrition; Supercereal to pregnant and nursing women with micronutrient deficiencies and to the elderly with inadequate food consumption through the primary health care system.

Capacity Development HIV/AIDS and Nutrition - WFP provides ongoing support to the Ministry of Public Health. WFP has trained health care providers from the Ministry to offer nutrition counselling for people living with HIV. WFP has also strengthened the Ministry‘s programmes focused on the monitoring of child growth and development, through trainings and field monitoring. Through HIV and nutrition activities, WFP supports 290 doctors, psychologists and counsellors of 77 integrated heath units and 175 women living with HIV through nutrition education activities. Indirect beneficiaries include 36,391 people living with HIV who attend the integrated health centres.

Emergency Preparedness and Response - With its strategic position and political support of the government, WFP is able to quickly respond to disasters affecting the Dominican Republic, Haiti and other Caribbean islands.

WFP partners with the Centre for Emergency Operations and the Ministry of the Presidency's emergency response enhancement project to support capacity development in logistics and telecommunications. Through the “Forecast-Based Emergency Preparedness for Climate Risks" project, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, WFP will support the government with the use of accurate forecasting and climate risk analysis to improve early warning and develop appropriate special preparedness measures.
