Highlights

  • On 29-30 November, Pope Francis visited the Central African Republic (CAR) as part of his landmark Africa tour in an effort to end two years of intercommunal violence and bring a message of peace and reconciliation.

  • Due to the sharp deterioration of the security situation and increasing intercommunal violence, almost 50,000 people have been newly displaced, adding to the existing 400,000 IDPs living in camps and host communities. According to the CMP, the total number of displaced persons was 447,487 at the end of October, up from 399,024 in September.

  • In provinces gravely affected by the recent security incidents, in November UNICEF established 105 temporary learning spaces (TLS) in 19 sites to provide basic learning opportunities to 15,000 displaced children.

  • In October and November, UNICEF provided 3,310 cartons of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food in addition to therapeutic milk and essential medicine (capable of covering the treatment of around 3,761 children with severe acute malnutrition) to replace stock looted from partners during the September crisis.

  • Through UNICEF’s Rapid Response Mechanism, two non-food item (NFI) interventions took place in Mambere Kadei and Nana Grebizi prefectures, reaching a total of 7,057 individuals. An additional 2,000 highly vulnerable persons in Mambere Kadei were reached with WASH interventions.

  • With support from UNICEF, some 100 m3 of water per day was provided to 7,000 internally displaced persons at the Evêché site at a ratio of 14 litres per person per day.
