UNICEF Iraq Humanitarian Situation Report - MAY 2015

Highlights

  • As of May 2015, over 3 million Iraqis have been internally displaced since the beginning of 2014.

  • As of mid-May, Ramadi City has been reportedly under the full control of ISIL. As many as 251,000 individuals have been displaced from Ramadi District since 8 April, with numbers of displaced families almost doubling during the last two weeks of May.

  • In May, UNICEF supported a national polio immunization campaign that vaccinated 4.9 million children under the age of five, including 152,039 IDP children.

  • With the summer months approaching, IDPs are in need of Non Food Items (NFI) and WASH assistance, designed to increase their resilience towards the hot temperatures, which can reach more than 50 degrees in some parts of Iraq.

  • In response to the massive influx of IDPs from Anbar into Baghdad Governorate, UNICEF, with the support of its partners established six Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in three IDP camps and three mosques serving as collective centers.

  • The installation of a tented classroom school in Takiyah Collective Center in Baghdad and the construction of one school in Sulaymaniyah Governorate have been completed, giving more than 1,600 students access to education.

  • In response to the recent displacements from Anbar and other hot-spot areas, throughout the month of May, the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) Consortium distributed 64,313 RRM kits to approximately 450,191 individuals at more than 52 locations across nine governorates.
