Kenya: UNHCR Kenya Kakuma Operational Update, 27 November - 09 December 2015

HIGHLIGHTS

  • As at 09 November 2015, Kakuma had registered 48,050 refugees from South Sudan. During the reporting period, 200 individuals were transported to the camp from Nadapal border. As at 07 December, the total registered camp population was 183,665 with 92,741 (50.5%) from South Sudan.

  • The ECHO Desk Officer for Kenya and ECHO Communications Officer for East, Central and Southern Africa were in Kakuma on 07 December for a day mission. The mission focused on ECHO support to humanitarian assistance for refugees in the camp. The team was briefed on the operation by the Head of sub-office and later visited specific ECHO funded projects in the camp.

  • UNHCR and IRC organized a 5km marathon on 07 December to commemorate the Montreal Massacre. The marathon brought together about 1,200 participants from all over the camp including host community members. Participants included men, women and people with disabilities. The winners of the race were awarded with bicycles, NFIs and livestock (goats).

  • World Disability Day was marked on 03 December by over 600 participants under the theme: Inclusion Matters: Access and Empowerment for People of All Abilities. Key note speeches from UNHCR and partner agencies highlighted the commitment of agencies to enhance programs that ensures appropriate services for persons with disabilities are in place. The day seeks to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support to promote the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of societal life.

  • World Aids Day was marked on 01 December in the camp under the 2015 theme “Getting to Zero - Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths”. The “Getting to Zero” campaign was underscored through various performances by refugees and speeches from Government, Ministry of Health, UNHCR and other agencies’ representatives. In Kakuma, the slogan for the day was “I am my brother’s/sister’s keeper: Fight HIV/AIDs”. Speakers called for joint efforts to ensure education for all on the basic facts of HIV/AIDs, access to treatment and services.

  • UNHCR hosted a one day familiarization mission from Unilever on 30 November 2015. Unilever intends to partner with UNHCR to promote business skills, entrepreneurial opportunities, and the integration of refugee and host community economies through micro-enterprise development and to promote healthy hygiene practices through hand washing programs, and increased consumption of soap per person, per household.
