Overview
On 26 December 2015, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan and Pakistan. The epicenter of the quake was in the remote Afghan province of Badakhshan, close to the border with Pakistan and Tajikistan.
Within Pakistan, there are reported damages in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit Baltistan. A total of 104 people have been injured (92 of which were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), with 4 reported casualties (2 in FATA and 1 Gilgit Baltistan) and 12 houses damaged. Several landslides occurred on the Karakoram Highway, but the road was expected to reopen the same day.
Response
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is coordinating with the district administration and health facilities in all districts to gather information on human losses and structural damages. An emergency was declared for all hospitals in the province. OCHA is in contact with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the provincial-level disaster management authorities in all affected areas of Pakistan.
26 October 2015 Earthquake
This earthquake comes two months after an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck Afghanistan and Pakistan also with an epicenter in Badakhshan Province. The October earthquake left 271 dead (225 of which were in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and 2,158 injured, and 147 schools damaged.
