SITUATION UPDATE
Two weeks of tenuous ceasefire in Yemen coinciding with UN-sponsored peace talks in Switzerland came to an end on January 2, following an announcement by the pro-government, Saudi-led coalition. During the ceasefire period, relief organizations, including International Medical Corps, worked to negotiate access to areas of need to deliver medical care, food, and other assistance, successfully reaching districts that have been difficult to reach due to conflict and numerous checkpoints. However, active fighting, shelling, and airstrikes continued throughout the temporary truce, hampering the ability of relief organizations to deliver much of the needed aid. In Taizz City, some areas have been under siege for more than three months, with approximately 200,000 people cut off from assistance. Despite the agreement of conflict parties on December 17 to allow a full resumption of humanitarian aid to Taizz, organizations remain unable to negotiate access for supply deliveries to hospitals in parts of the city. For the duration of the ceasefire, the UN World Health Organization was unable to negotiate passage for five trucks carrying 22 tons of trauma medicines, diarrheal medications, oxygen cylinders, and other supplies intended for Al Thowra, Al Jumhouri, Al Rawdah, and Al Mudhaffar hospitals. International Medical Corps was also unable to negotiate passage for a truck carrying medicines, interagency emergency health kits, and consumables for Al Thowra.
