Situation Overview
As of early January, heavy airstrikes continue in Al Hudaydah, Sana’a, and Taizz governorates, while ground fighting has intensified in Hajjah, Lajh, Marib and Taizz governorates.
On 18 January, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on the Yemeni Government and all parties in Yemen, as well as States in the region to commit to a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire to enable the resumption of already delayed peace talks facilitated by the United Nations. The Secretary General also stressed the need for all sides to implement the confidence-building measures discussed in Switzerland last month, including allowing unhindered humanitarian access to the central town of Taiz.
