Highlights
In November and December 10 attacks in Diffa region caused the massive displacement of over 100,000 people, including preventive displacement, towards Route Nationale 1. A total of 49 civilians and 2 soldiers were killed, including a young girl and 4 adolescents.
This massive displacement occurred during the harvest season of millet and the planting season of green pepper, some of the main sources of revenue for the population, thus contributing to further worsening of humanitarian situation for displaced populations and host communities. Further deterioration of the nutritional status of affected population is expected in the coming months.
Thanks to a joint effort with the government, by end of December 5,492 children had been able to return to school.
In December the first Multi-Sectoral Analysis (MSA) has been conducted by UNICEF partner IRC in Diffa, in the context of the new Rapid Response Mechanism programme, as a validated tool of the Humanitarian Community.
In Diffa region as of December 31st, a total 16,674 children under five suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) have been admitted for treatment. Nationwide, the total of malnourished children have been admitted for treatment in therapeutic feeding centers nationwide.
