Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • Biophysical and environmental indicators show no unusual fluctuations. Rainfall received in May was above normal and unevenly distributed spatially.
    Cumulative rainfall received led to significant forage rejuvenation and recharge of water reservoirs.

  • Standard precipitation index of 0.56 exhibits above normal rainfall received in May.

  • Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) for the month of May was 36.79 which is below normal and depicts no drought in Moyale.

  • The current state of water is at level 5 which is normal at this time of the year. Water pan is the main source of water.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Livestock body condition is good with a score of 6 which exhibits good smooth appearance.

  • There was no unusual migration of livestock

  • Children ‘at risk’ of malnutrition were 13.15% compared to the long term average of 18.5% which is within the normal range.

  • Terms of Trade are favourable at 106 which are above normal at this particular time of the year
