Zika virus neurological complications

As of 30 January 2016, the Brazil Ministry of Health reported 4 783 cases of microcephaly and/or central nervous system (CNS) malformation including 76 deaths. Of the 76 reported deaths due to congenital malformations, Zika virus was identified in fetal tissue of 5 cases. Although the microcephaly cases in Brazil are spatio-temporally associated with the Zika outbreak, more robust investigations and research is needed to better understand this potential link. Tonga: There have been 549 suspected cases and two confirmed cases. Awareness campaigns have been launched by the government with increased efforts to destroy mosquito breeding sites. Source: Matangi Tonga

Acute Fever and Rash

There continues to be an increase in the number of cases reported from American Samoa from the end of December to week ending 7 February 2016. Samples have been sent for confirmatory testing and results are pending. Source: American Samoa Department of Health.

Dengue

Fiji: increasing numbers of Dengue-Like Illness (DLI) have been reported for week ending 7 February 2016. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)

Between 22 and 27 January 2016, the National International Health Regulation Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of 5 additional cases of MERS-CoV infection. Globally, since September 2012, WHO has been notified of 1,638 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV, including at least 587 related deaths.
