Situation Overview

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee, indicates that 1.5 million Children affected out of 2.87 million among overall Food insecure population. Generally Malawi is exposed to a number of hazards including floods, droughts, hailstorms, strong winds. The intensity and frequency of the hydro-meteorological hazards in have been increasing in recent decades, due to climate change and variability, as well as other factors, including population growth, urbanization and environmental degradation. Malawi currently going through few concurrent emergencies that is drought in 25 districts, Cholera in 9 districts, People of concern fleeing from Mozambique in to Malawi and Floods in Karonga district. The CMAM program comprises of various components implemented jointly by the Ministry of health , UN partners such as UNICEF, WFP , NGOS, and I/NGOs under the stewardship of the Government of Malawi DNHA/MoH

By end of January 367,355 children under 5 years were screened for acute malnutrition as part mass screening campaign; 4,466 children of were found Severely Acute Malnourished and 16,477 Children Moderately Acute Malnourished , the identified cases were referred to Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) facilities for appropriate management. CMAM program is being implemented in all districts of Malawi by MoH and supported through UNICEF, WFP. High Number of deaths in NRU (80 deaths out of 731 admitted children– 11%) remained a great matter of concern, cluster is putting the efforts to address the issue in best manner. The mass screening drive has brought great results in active case finding through outreach activities. The Nutrition Cluster is closely monitoring the situation through effective coordination mechanisms The cluster meetings continued to held every month , with a good participation and focused on delivering the core cluster functions .
