Kenya: UNHCR Kenya Kakuma Operational Update, 16 – 29 February 2016

HIGHLIGHTS

  • As at 29 February 2016, Kakuma had received and registered 50,534 refugees from South Sudan. This brings the total registered camp population to 187,333 with South Sudanese making up 51.1% (95,641) of the population.

  • UNHCR Head of Service Private Sector Fundraising (PSFR), Christian Schaake was in Kakuma on 29 February. The mission’s aim was to familiarize with the operation and identify areas that require fundraising in 2016. Mr. Schaake was accompanied by PSFR colleagues from the Copenhagen and Nairobi Regional offices. He was briefed by the head of sub office on the operation and later visited some of the privately funded schools in the camp (Angelina Jolie and Morneau Shepell schools for girls), a youth training centre, a primary school and clinic and interacted with refugees.

  • From 22 to 26 February, the sub-office hosted a 4 day familiarization mission from UNV Regional office. The UNV team held meetings with youths and vulnerable groups in the camp. The outcome of the mission will be a concept paper on how to pilot the outreach volunteer program in Kakuma with the aim of strengthening community based protection.

411 New arrivals received during reporting period

140 Children screened for malnutrition at reception centre

20 Litres of water provided per person during reporting period

7,500 Number of roofed durable shelters for new arrivals
