The purpose of this report is to provide the update on the current operations undertaken after TC Winston.
This Situation Report is issued by the National Emergency Operation Centre and covers the period from 0800hrs - 1600 hours, 10/03/2016. Updates in this report summarise all reports and briefs submitted from various EOC’s in the four divisions.
1.0 NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS :
- HON. VOREQE BAINIMARAMA – PRIME MINISTER, MINISTER FOR ITAUKEI AFFAIRS AND SUGAR INDUSTRY
Hon.Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has visited schools in Vunidawa and Waidina, Naitasiri that were affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston. Bainimarama visited Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School and Naitavuni Catholic School distributing school bags, exercise books and other stationery. Vunidawa Sanatan Primary School Head-teacher Log Nandan says four classrooms were partially damaged with an estimated cost of damage close to $15,000. 51 students were affected by TC Winston. The school now has 4 tarpaulins and 4 sets of toolkits from the Education Ministry as a temporary measure. Ninety-three students of Naitavuni Catholic School have had a classroom block and Head Teachers office completely destroyed.
- HON. JONE USAMATE – MINISTER FOR HEALTH AND MEDICAL SERVICES
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Jone Usamate was chief guest at the opening of the Acute Dialysis Unit located within the Intensive Care Unit at CWM Hospital
- HON. INIA SERUIRATU – MINISTER FOR RURAL AND MARITIME DEVELOPMENT AND NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT
Permanent Secretary for Rural & Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Mr. Meleti Bainimarama today received on behalf of the Hon. Minister Rehabilitation tools and equipment from UNDP such as chainsaws, brush cutters, wheelbarrows, knives, nails and gumboots.
- French Navy vessel to be deployed to Northern Lau today
The French Navy vessel, La Morqueuse (Morkesse) will be deployed to Northern Lau today to help those who have been affected by Cyclone Winston. French Embassy representative Jules Irrmann says they will meet with NDMO to see if they are needed in any other places. The French Navy vessel brought in relief aid such as temporary shelters and hygiene packs and also has French military engineers on board for rehabilitation and rebuilding purposes. The La Morqueuese will depart Suva today.
- The Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Paul Bayly visited West EOC at 0830hrs and the Divisional Commissioner Western briefed on TC Winston Relief. The Divisional Commissioner Western was undertaking ration distribution at Saunokonoko village and Namarasa settlement.
