STATISTICS AND HIGHLIGHTS
UNHCR and partners learned of 183 irregular arrivals, 77 from Bulgaria and 106 from fYR Macedonia.
Some 180 persons were admitted into Hungary / procedures in “transit zones”. UNHCR and partners aided those waiting with food and non-food aid.
93 (2 on 08/04; 39 on 09/04 and 52 on 10/04) persons expressed intent to seek asylum, bringing the total in April 2016 to 197 and for the whole of 2016 to 2,138 (statistics courtesy of the Ministry of Interior).
SOUTH
Around 460 refugees remained accommodated in the Reception Centre (RC) in Presevo. More than 50 refugees/migrants newly arrived at the RC from fYR Macedonia. Many applied for asylum and were referred to Asylum Centres, while others were issued with expulsion orders.
UNHCR/SPDE distributed 836 water bottles at the new common distribution point in the RC. The Divac Foundation assisted with clothes and food. The UNHCR-supported Public Health and the Natan/Humedica NGO clinic treated 244 patients.
The UNICEF/DRC/CSW child friendly space hosted 204 children and 177 women in total. Different recreational activities, including body painting for children by REMAR and a dance session for women by Mercy Corps were organised.
EAST
25 refugees/migrants arrived in Zajecar and a couple with a baby from Afghanistan near Dimitrovgrad. UNHCR partners Sigma Plus and Indigo as well as the Red Cross provided food, water and other aid.
BELGRADE
Over 250 refugees/migrants were observed daily in Belgrade. Most were from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Pakistan. The Asylum Info Centre (AIC) assisted 150 every day, including new arrivals from fYR Macedonia and Bulgaria. Between 150 and 200 spent the nights in parks near the bus and train stations.
NORTH
Approximately 60 asylum-seekers were admitted into Hungarian asylum procedures close to Horgos I and Kalabija border-crossings every day. Some 50-100 asylum, including women and children, waited outside the two “transit zones” in the open land at any one time. They arrived from the Refugees Aid Points (RAP) in the West and from Belgrade.
UNHCR/HCIT distributed food and non-food aid, including UNHCR torchlights, blankets, and raincoats, to those waiting. MSF offered medical assistance. UNHCR is waiting for clearance from authorities to also provide access to sanitary facilities and emergency rain shelters.
WEST
The numbers of refugees in the three RAP in the West continued to fluctuate. Around 164 refugees were hosted at the end of the reporting period in Sid, Adasevci and Principovac, including several who returned there tired from having waiting in the open outside the Hungarian “transit zones”.
CRS/Divac Foundation continued to distribute hot meals at all three RAP. The UNICEF/WV/CSW child friendly space in Adasevci hosted a total of 51 children and 12 women. BCM/Sid Health Centre at Adasevci RAP and WAHA treated over 60 patients.
Approximately 70 refugees remained hosted at the Principovac RAP. They reported deteriorating hygienic conditions, leading to foul odours and an infestation by mice and head lice.
