Highlights
Syria: In March, IOM reached around 30,800 IDPs and conflict-affected populations in Al Hole (western Homs) and Big Orem (western Aleppo) through inter-agency convoys with health and non-food items. Through its hub in Jordan, in response to the urgent need of humanitarian assistance for IDPs in Sheikh Miskeen, IOM distributed 2,410 sleeping bags on 5 March.
Lebanon: On 23 March, IOM conducted a training on ‘Tuberculosis (TB) Screening in Prisons’ for National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP) staff operating at the different NTP centres in Lebanon. The training was provided by the NTP manager in collaboration with a health consultant from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).
Iraq: Since the beginning of the Syrian Crisis, IOM has provided transportation to over 100,000 refugees from border areas to camps and to access essential services, provided NFIs to over a quarter million beneficiaries, and livelihood support for over 5,000 beneficiaries.
Jordan: In March, there was an increase in the number of vulnerable refugees admitted per day (80 – 100 individuals), compared to an average of 73 refugees per day in February. During the reporting period, IOM provided 3,084 refugees with transportation assistance from Raba'a Al Sarhan transit centre to Za'atari and Azraq camps.
Turkey: Throughout March, IOM assisted 55 vulnerable cases (187 beneficiaries) requiring specialized assistance and protection. In 2016, IOM has assisted a total of 91 cases (298 beneficiaries). Majority of cases are those with medical needs or are in need of accommodation or rental assistance. The team receives referrals from UN agencies, NGOs, government authorities as well as IOM field teams.
Egypt: In celebration of International Women’s Day, IOM distributed dignity kits to Syrian women, provided a 10-minute medical briefing on the need for Pap smear tests and mammograms, and offered them the opportunity to be screened for cervical and breast cancer at one of Cairo’s medical health care providers.
