STATISTICS AND HIGHLIGHTS
For the first time since last summer, the estimate total number of refugees and migrants accommodated in governmental sites in Serbia, camping in Belgrade at the Hungarian border or elsewhere, dropped below one thousand. Most now lack any registration or legal status in Serbia.
The number of refugees accommodated at Asylum Centres and transit sites fell to 251, with less than 50 in the two transit sites in the West and 115 in the Reception Centre in Presevo.
63 asylum seekers departed by accessing asylum procedures in “transit zones” of Hungary.
UNHCR and partners learned of 34 irregular arrivals: 17 from fYR Macedonia and 17 from Bulgaria.
28 persons expressed intent to seek asylum, bringing the total in April 2016 to 390 and for the whole of 2016 to 2,331 (statistics courtesy of the Ministry of Interior).
SOUTH
The Reception Centre (RC) in Presevo accommodated 115 refugees. The UNHCR-supported Public Health and the Natan/Humedica NGO clinic treated 20 patients. The UNICEF/DRC/CSW child friendly space / mother and baby corner hosted 11 children and 7 women.
BELGRADE
UNHCR and partners assisted over 350 refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Most were from Afghanistan, Pakistan or Somalia. The Asylum Info Centre remained open 24/7 and assisted new irregular arrivals from fYR Macedonia and Bulgaria to access asylum procedures in Serbia. UNHCR/DRC and MSF provided medical assistance while Refugee Aid Miksaliste also helped them. Some 250 refugees/migrants spent the nights in parks near the bus and train stations.
NORTH
Approximately 250 asylum seekers, including many women and children, waited outside the two “transit zones” near Kelebija and Horgos I border-crossings. They stayed in improvised tents without any access to toilets. The municipal waste management company cleaned the field in Horgos. Some 30 asylum seekers were admitted into each “transit zone”.
UNHCR/HCIT distributed ready-made food, 504 water bottles and 300 WFP HEBs, 133 raincoats, ten UNHCR blankets and 300 plastic bags. Additional food and water was donated by the Divac Foundation and World Vision through partners while MSF provided medical assistance at both sites.
WEST
45 refugees remain hosted in the RAPs in the West: 22 in Adasevci and 23 in Sid, including four IOM’s Assisted Voluntary Return candidates, who still await transfer to more suitable accommodation. All the other ARV candidates reportedly also departed towards the border with Hungary. CRS/Divac Foundation continued to provide hot lunches and OM hot tea. The UNICEF child friendly space in Sid hosted 3 children. The BCM/Sid Health Centre at Adasevci treated four refugees and WAHA 13 in Sid.
