Background:
On 15 April 2016 at 16:25:06 (UTC), 16 April, 01:25 (JST), a magnitude 7.3 earthquake was reported on the island of Kyushu in Japan (source). This quake followed a series of multiple quakes, the largest of which was a 6.2 on the 14 April. More than 680 aftershocks have hit Kyushu island. More than 89 have registered at magnitude 4 or more on Japan’s intensity scale, strong enough to shake buildings (source). 5,500 homes have been partially or completely damaged, and an estimated 93,000 people are staying in 732 evacuation centres in Kumamoto, Oita, Fukuoka and Nagasaki prefectures (source). ● More assistance is needed for the elderly, people with disabilities, people with chronic health conditions, and people who are are living in their cars. (source) Assistance is also needed at shelters that are not designated as “official” shelters by the government.
● Blood clots are becoming a health problem for people living in their cars and in cramped evacuation centers. (source)
● 16 medical facilities are partially operating but lack water and/or gas. 8 facilities are closed due to structural damage. Over 190 medical teams, including 11 teams specializing in mental health services, are operating on the ground. Additional teams from other prefectures are being deployed or are on standby. (source)
