HIGHLIGHTS

Market Access for refugee made products

 UNHCR secured the opportunity for refugees to access to product market at the UN Gift Shop situated at the UN complex in Gigiri - Nairobi. Following a meeting between UNHCR Livelihoods team and the UNON administration, the refugee Gambella beads group will be allowed to provide beads products for display at the shop outlet next to the UN Commissary. This is an additional market outlet opportunity for the Gambella group (comprising of more than 30 refugee women) in Ifo camp, who already have access to the international market through the Ethical Fashion initiative.

Garissa Area Advisory Council meeting on Child Protection

 On 5th April, the Area Advisory Council (AAC) meeting held at the Garissa County Commissioner’s office with UNHCR and Child Protection stakeholders. The aim was to discuss civil registration of children during birth and operationalization of the Child Protection unit at the police station which was completed but is yet to be launched since gaps had been noted in the registration process. A taskforce to be chaired by the Assistant County Commissioner was formed to look into the registration gaps and draw actionable points. The Child Protection facility shall be used to accommodate minors and children of arrested persons including refugee children.

Resettlement

 During the first half of April, a total of 17 cases comprising of 68 individuals underwent resettlement case composition interviews. 54 cases comprising of 169 individuals were interviewed and assessed for possible submission to various resettlement countries.

 24 cases comprising of 84 individuals were submitted to UNHCR Branch Office Nairobi for onward resettlement to the United States of America. Since 1st January 2016, 642 individuals have been submitted to resettlement (including new born babies added on to cases already in the pipeline) countries.

 A total of 10 individuals are confirmed to have departed Nairobi for onward resettlement to the United States of America and Canada. Since 1st January 2016, 385 individuals have departed to resettlement countries.

 A total of 66 movement passes were prepared and issued for individuals departing Dadaab for onward resettlement countries. 38 movement passes were prepared and issued for 110 individuals being moved to Nairobi for Sweden adjudication interviews.

 Six cases (medical referrals) were referred for deliberation at the protection-referral panel and all were approved for further resettlement processing. Resettlement case status feedback and counselling was provided for 120 individuals in camps.
