Highlights
In March, WFP assisted 152,102 people in need through free school meals (School feeding) and nutrition initiatives.
If WFP Guinea-Bissau does not receive the expected commodities in May, a pipeline break is anticipated in May for School feeding activities. In March, WFP reduced rations to stretch the pipeline to the end of April. WFP has already started international purchase of food to cover the pipeline break for nutrition.
Operational Updates
On 1 March, the African School Feeding Day, WFP issued a press release on the event, its relevance and WFP’s activities around the world. It was well covered in national media.
For International Women’s Day (8 March), WFP supported the government to organize advocacy for gender equality events and trainings on women empowerment.
From 7 to 22 March WFP supported the Ministry of Agriculture to train smallholder farmer on Moto Cultivator utilization and maintenance. The 250 Moto Cultivators were provided by World Bank through the Ministry of Agriculture. The three training day’s benefited 77 smallholder farmers from all regions of the country.
WFP also started a sensitization campaign about food and nutrition for people living with HIV. The campaign is part of a project on nutrition support to people living with HIV funded by Global Fund trough the National Secretariat for Fight against HIV. The campaign messages will be broadcasted for one month on National TV and for three months on the National Radio Station in the national language and seven dialects.
