World: Pacific syndromic surveillance report: Week 18 ending 8 May 2016

The following syndromes have been flagged:

· Diarrhoea: Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Vanuatu

· Influenza-like Illness: American Samoa, FSM

· Prolonged fever: Solomon Islands

Other updates:

Influenza

· Continually increased number of cases has been reported from Pohnpei state, FSM. Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic has been identified. Source: FSM Ministry of Health.

Zika virus

· As of 29 April Kosrae state, FSM reported 4 confirmed cases and 67 suspected cases as of since 10 February 2016. None of the confirmed cases had a prior travel history nor were any of the cases pregnant. Enhance surveillance for zika is ongoing in all health clinics as well as surveillance for congenital zika syndrome. Source: Kosrae EpiNet team.

· **American Samoa: **Since 1 June 569 suspected cases were reported of which 14 laboratory confirmed including 6 pregnant women. For further details please refer to PacNet post by Fesili Niumata-Foifua earlier today.

**Conjunctivitis **

· There is an ongoing outbreak in Tonga. In the last five weeks Vaiola hospital has registered more cases than the whole of 2015. Source: Media

Yellow Fever

· As of 4 May 2016, Angola has reported 2149 suspected cases of yellow fever with 277 deaths. Among those cases, 661 have been laboratory confirmed. Despite vaccination campaigns in Luanda, there is still circulation of the virus in most districts of Luanda and in five additional provinces.

· Three countries have reported confirmed yellow fever cases exported from Angola**: Democratic Republic of The Congo** (37 cases), Kenya (two cases) and People’s Republic of China (11 cases). Namibia has also reported a suspect yellow fever case exported from Angola. This highlights the risk of international spread through non-immunised travellers.
