The number of ceasefire violations in eastern Ukraine showed a marked increase in April, in comparison to previous months. On 16 April for example, as many as 4,000 violations were recorded throughout eastern Ukraine. On 27 April, a mortar attack on the Olenivka checkpoint (Donetsk region or oblast) killed five civilians and injured another eight.
Following the end of the three rounds of the national polio vaccination campaign, an outbreak assessment team visited Ukraine from 18-28 April. The assessment team concluded that the transmission of the circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV-1) has probably stopped. The level of community confidence in vaccination has considerably increased due to the significant efforts made to reach high-risk populations.
From 26-29 April UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom visited Ukraine as part of the global UNICEF appeal for Education in Emergencies. Mr.
Bloom met children in schools and kindergartens damaged during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts have provided safe drinking water to more than 1.5 million people every month since the beginning of 2016.
UNICEF is finalizing the rehabilitation of 51 schools in Donetsk and Luhansk along the contact line, enabling safe access to education for 18,000 children.
