Highlights

  • The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reports that as of 24 May 2016, over 258,400 people are affected by floods, landslides, heavy rain caused by Cyclone Roanu during the past 10 days.

  • DMC reports 94 people as dead and 107 people still missing, mainly due to the landslide in Aranayake, Kegalle district. Thirty-two (32) people are reported as injured.

  • As the situation normalized with floods receding, currently, 126,666 people (26,536 families) are living in 268 welfare centres in 8 districts (Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Rathnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Mathale, Kandy).

  • Colombo accounts for the highest displacement thus far with 99,723 people (20,008 families) still living in 60 welfare centres, followed by Kegalle district (11,494 people displaced) due to landslide risks.

  • To date, Government of Sri Lanka has declared a disaster but not a state of emergency.
