An escalation of conflict in areas located between Sirte, Misrata, Abu Ghareen and Zedadah, and the declaration of Sirte as a military zone, have contributed to an increase in displacement from Sirte to Bani Walid, Tarhouna, Tripoli and other cities.
According to initial estimates up to 5,560 households have left Sirte and arrived to Bani Walid, Tarhouna, Tripoli, and cities nearby. More households are expected. There are reports of arbitrary measures being taken against people in the valley of Punjam and Wadi Zamzam, which include preventing of freedom of movement, confiscating money and property and the detention of individuals.
According to the DTM Round 3 Report (March-April 2016), Sirte, Harawa and their related neighbourhoods had collective displacement waves of 1,225 families over 15 days due to ongoing conflict. IDP’s are reported as being displaced from Sirte mainly to Bani Walid and Tarhuna (300 – 400 km west of Sirte), but also to Qasr bin Gshir, Espiaa and Suq Al Khamis. Displaced families follow a pattern of initially fleeing from one neighborhood to another and then traveling long distances to other cities when an opportunity arises.
The DTM Round 3 (March-April 2016) has identified 20,000 IDP individuals currently residing in Bani Walid, 82% of them from Sirte and 18% from Misrata.
