MAIN ACTIVITIES
Protection
- Mali situation: UNHCR, partners and local authorities organized sensitization meetings on voluntary repatriation processes in the Malian refugee camps of Tillabery (Abala, Mangaize, and Tabareybarey), following increasing requests for assisted voluntary repatriation. In April, 125 households of 534 persons were voluntary repatriated to Mali from Tabareybarey camp. At the same time, the camps and ZARs continue to welcome newly arrived refugees.
Education
- Nigeria situation: For the first time, as part of the Distance Education Programme, 40 Nigerian refugee students attending the 3 Distance Education Centers in Diffa, travelled to Kano (Nigeria) to complete their end of year state examinations, accompanied by UNHCR. A second group of 31 students will make the journey to Nigeria in May for the second state examination session.
Water & Sanitation
- Nigeria situation: The mini water supply system in the Goudoumaria site has been completed and inspected by the Regional Directorate of Hydraulics, the local authorities and the private company who carried out the construction. The system is now fully operational and has the same capacity to provide water as 16 standard water points, which equates to approximately 4,000 people. The site is ready to welcome new populations expected to be relocated there.
Health
- Mali situation: In April 48 cases of measles were detected and treated in the Mangaize camp. All of the cases identified were amongst newly arrived refugees. UNHCR have responded by putting in place a stringent monitoring and vaccination system for all new arrivals. A broad vaccination campaign has been launched in order to stop the spread of the disease amongst the refugee and local population.
Shelter and NFI:
- Nigeria situation: Out-of-camp emergency shelter distribution was prioritized in April. A total of 600 emergency shelters were distributed in Bosso, 400 were distributed at the site of Yebi, 600 at the site of Dagaya began in April, with a further 200 emergency shelters distributed at the Kangouri 1 site. That is a total of almost 1,800 emergency shelters in April alone.
Energy
- Nigeria situation: During the month of April, an additional 632 gas bottles were distributed in the two camps, bringing the total number distributed to-date to 1,346. This is benefitting 647 families in Sayam Forage and 699 families in Kabelawa. Outside of the camps, sensitization sessions at spontaneous IDP sites along the RN1 were carried out prior to the first distributions which are planned for May.
