Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification Biophysical Indicators

  • Rainfall report: 403.6 mm of rainfall was received around Mt Marsabit and its close environs. This is way above normal for the region with the rains being erratic. The spatial and temporal distribution was fair.
  • Vegetation condition; Pasture and browse condition is fair in most parts of the pastoral livelihood zone and good in agro pastoral livelihoods.Vegetation condition is improving.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Production indicators; most of livestock body condition is good with some having fair body condition.
  • Livestock Migration has decreased across the county as pasture rejuvenates and water for livestock is available. No livestock deaths as a result of drought. Milk production has slightly improved in some areas especially agro pastoral areas.
  • Access indicators; Terms of trade is stable due to unchanged livestock prices but was above normal ranges. Return distance to water sources has greatly improved due to ongoing rains. Milk consumption has also improved due to increased production compared to last month.
  • Utilization Indicators; malnutrition levels has slightly improved with 18.4% children less than 5 years at risk of malnutrition. Coping strategies index has improved compared to last month.
