Humanitarian Overview
On Friday 24th June, the dismissal of the incumbent Governor of Wau by the President led to instability in the town, with fighting breaking out between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and youth associated with the opposition. There have been reports of civilian casualties and loss of life; investigations are ongoing. As of 4th July, the situation remains calm.
It is estimated that up to 65,000 people may have been displaced by the violence. The World Food Programme has completed registration of internally displaced persons (IDPs) within the Protection of Civilian (POC) site, which is reportedly now hosting 17,271 IDPs, 46% of whom are children – 3,081 IDPs in the POC are in fact under the age of five.
