ECUADOR
Three months after the April 16 earthquake (magnitude 7.8), some 2,220 aftershocks have been recorded. Aftershocks have caused an increase in the number of people moving to shelters. The earthquake left 668 people dead. The National Planning Secretariat reports that the reconstruction of areas affected by the earthquake will cost about US$3.3 billion. So far $18 million has been received of the $73 requested through the international appeal – representing 18% coverage.

Health authorities in the department of Puno report the deaths of 13 children under 5 from low temperatures in the 2016 cold season. Some 45,714 children have received medical attention for to acute respiratory infections and other 548 for pneumonia. Puno is the most affected department with 233,757 cases (almost 50% of cases of reported in the country).

VENEZUELA
Colombian authorities report that more than 132,000 Venezuelans crossed the border into Colombia (departments of Arauca and Norte de Santander) this weekend to buy food and medicine before crossing back. This number is up from a couple of weeks earlier, when 65,000 Venezuelans crossed into to Colombia to purchase supplies.

More than 40,000 people are affected by floods and heavy rains in the department of Antioquia (northwest). Caucasia is one of the most affected towns, where some 20,000 people have suffered damages to their homes. The year’s first rainy season is mitigating the consequences of the 2015 drought (one of the most severe in decades brought about by El Niño), but is also causing floods.

COSTA RICA
Authorities report that some 3,000 African migrants have registered with immigration control for humanitarian assistance in Paso Canoas (border with Panama). At least 500 are stranded in Peñas Blancas (border with Nicaragua) waiting to continue their journey to the United States. Nicaraguan authorities have closed their border since November 2015.
