This information reflects the response work done by the Burundi Red Cross. The Burundi Red Cross with the support of its partners of the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent strictly operates in neutral, independent and impartial manner to meet the humanitarian needs.

Overview

The Bujumbura-rural province is particularly today under a big chock of flooding. The overflowing of Rusizi river due to El Nino torrential rains that hit hills of Rwanda and DR Congo from where it flows caused flooding in many areas of Gatumba zone in Mutimbuzi commune. Many houses are being destroyed leaving behind hundreds of persons homeless.
Some schools are also closed and many hectares of fields of crops are under water.
Moreover, some areas are inaccessible.

Current situation

Bujumbura-Rural (to date)

  • 755 houses destroyed/damages in 6 areas of Gatumba zone, in Mutimbuzi commune

  • 4179 persons are affected

  • 1488 school children affected

  • 990 children under 5 years are also affected

  • 1 primary school of Vugizo momentarily closed

  • many fields of crops flooded
