Malala visit to Dadaab
On 12th July, Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and an advocate for girls education visited Dadaab camps and celebrated her 19th birthday with refugees. During her visit, she interacted with girls in various locations in the camp, where she presided over various ceremonies including delivering speeches and handing over certificates to girls trained on leadership, life skills and resilience.
“You have challenged society and you are heroes. I salute you for your courage.” Malala told Dadaab refugee camp girls. Malala promised to use her voice to share their stories with the world. “All girls deserve 12 years of safe, free and quality education.” Malala added.
Malala also interacted with secondary school girls, refugee leadership and education officers from various schools in the camp. One of the interactions was with 25 girls from different secondary schools who in April, had a Skype session with her courtesy of Vodafone Foundation’s Instant Network Schools leadership lessons programme.
Population Verification Exercise
UNHCR and the Government of Kenya are carrying out a verification exercise in the Dadaab refugee camps in order to have a clear picture of the refugees living in the camps and gather more information on their condition. It is anticipated that the on-going exercise which started onth July will serve to ascertain the number of persons of concern living in each of the camps. As of 15th July a total number to 16,862 households (49,260 individuals) were processed
