In the week to 28 June 2015, there were eight confirmed Ebola cases, the same number of cases as the previous week. Cases came from the districts of Port Loko (2), Western Area Urban (4) and Kambia (2).
Last week, UNICEF and partners constructed 41 household latrines for quarantined households in Kambia and Port Loko districts, benefiting more than 246 people. All the 220 households (929 people) that have been under quarantine since the start of Operation Northern Push now have access to household latrines.
UNICEF, working together with the District Education Offices in Kambia and Port Loko, supported 361 children who are living in quarantined households by providing basic learning materials, supplementary reading and lesson notes so as to ensure continuity of learning during their quarantine period.
A total of 163 quarantined households (680 people) received replenishment supplies of soap and 18 hygiene kits were distributed to security check points in Kambia and Port Loko districts. House-tohouse hygiene promotion sessions are continuing in the affected chiefdoms to sensitize the quarantined households on good hygiene practices.
Despite the rains, UNICEF-led social mobilization teams continued intensified social mobilization in Port Loko and Kambia districts, reaching 13,876 people through community meetings in 1,160 communities.
Monitoring of schools is continuing in Port Loko and Kambia. 83 per cent of both boys and girls were in school in Port Loko while in Kambia, 81 percent of boys and 85 percent of girls were in school on the day of monitoring.
UNICEF Sierra Leone requires a further USD 57.3 million of the USD 178 million requested for its response to the Ebola crisis, until the end of June 2015. To date, USD 120.5 million has been received – 68 percent of the total.*
