Situation
According to data gathered from government and private hospitals and media, 1,235 people have died due to extreme heat in Karachi and an additional 30 people have died in interior Sindh. The main causes of death were high temperatures (possibly as high as 46C) combined with high humidity. In addition, power outages prevented the use of electric fans and air conditioning in many areas. Most casualties occurred between 19 to 25 June. Sindh government and health department have not issued any official figures on the death toll. According to media reports more than 40,000 people were affected by the heat, and hospitals were crowded with patients seeking treatment.
Since 24 June lower humidity, scattered breezes, and an increase in cloud cover have resulted in lower temperatures (as low as 35C) which indicates the situation is returning to normal. Government and private hospitals report fewer patients and fatalities since 24 June.
