HIGHLIGHTS

  • Cholera outbreak: 724 cholera cases, including 34 deaths, have been reported from Juba County, Central Equatoria State, and Bor, Jonglei State, since the first case was confirmed on 1 June. UNHCR and partner ACROSS conducted a rapid assessment in Gorom refugee camp, where there have been 5 cases but no deaths, on 3 July.

  • Ajuong Thok population: Ajuong Thok refugee camp's population topped 30,000 after new arrivals on 7 July.

  • Unity State road works: Two excavators, 2 bulldozers, 3 graders, 3 pneumatic roller compactors and 17 dumper trucks are in action on the Ajuong Thok expansion programme and the 14 km Pamir access road. Progress so far: Survey works for virgin roads - 10 km (45.1 per cent); bush clearing and grubbing - 8.0 km (40 per cent). Repair work on the Yida-Pariang road is also proceeding smoothly.

  • Mission to strife-torn Maridi: An inter-agency rapid needs assessment mission was conducted from 2-5 July in Maridi, Ibba and Madebe, Western Equatoria State. The team, consisting of representatives from UNHCR, OCHA, CMMB (Catholic Medical Mission Board), WHO, World Vision International (WVI) and South Sudan's Relief and Rehabilitation Committee (RRC), visited four villages in Maridi County and two in Ibba and Madebe. Identified needs include food, NFIs, health and WASH. Schools and the hospital in Maridi remain closed; most of the hospital equipment including medicines were reportedly looted. Some 4,000 IDPs have fled the area.

  • New school desks delivered: 148 new school desks were delivered to the three primary schools in Ajuong Thok refugee camp, Unity State.

  • Training for police: UNHCR and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) facilitated training for 50 participants from the Police and the Department of Social Welfare on child protection issues in Maban, Upper Nile State.
