Highlights
508 Households of 1,439 people relocated from the RN1 to Sayam Forage camp during the month of July.
900 Children were vaccinated – 200 between 6 and 11 months old and 700 between 12 months and 59 months old in the camp of Kablewa.
1,558 Malian refugees assisted to voluntarily repatriate to Mali from January – July 2016.
8,410 Mosquito nets distributed by UNHCR in the Tillabery region for Malian refugees, including 480 given to the Abala health center.
MAIN ACTIVITIES
Protection
Nigeria situation: Sensitization efforts with the populations at the various sites have been increased in order to facilitate the relocation process and to dismiss prejudices regarding the camp held by some of the refugees. A total number of 1,439 people were relocated from the Garin Wanzam on the RN1 to Sayam Forage camp in the month of July; Kindjandi will be the next site targeted.
Mali situation: The influx of Malians refugee onto Niger territory continues. From January to July 2016, UNHCR office registered 5,449 new arrivals in Niger. On the other hand, between January and July, UNHCR have facilitated the voluntary repatriation of 1,559 refugees to Mali.
Health
Nigeria situation: Actions are ongoing to improve the primary health facilities in Sayam Forage refugee camp, following the growth in population, including repairs of the temporary hangars. A measles vaccination camp in Sayam Forage for all children up to the age of 15 years is planned for the month of August, whilst 900 children in Kabelawa camp have already completed their vaccinations.
Mali situation: A large batch of medicinal products composed of 113 boxes of medications was delivered to Abala Integrated Health Centre to reinforce the government’s efforts in the framework of the provision of primary health care to host populations and refugees in the town of Abala.
EducationNigeria situation: 40 Junior Cycle Nigerian high school students in the Distance Education Programme in Diffa were assisted by UNHCR to return to Kano, Nigeria to sit their final exams in April. Of the 40 who sat the exams, 32 have successfully passed – a surprisingly high number. The West African Examinations Council have committed to supporting the establishment of an official examination center in Diffa following a recent mission.
Energy/ NFI
Nigeria situation: Distributions of gas bottles to vulnerable households outside of the camps are on-going. There is a very high level of satisfaction with this project which is also cheaper for beneficiaries. In the month of July, a total of 1,771 households received gas bottles in the localities of Boutty, Kilakam, Goudoumaria, Djaleri, Maine Soara, Gagamari, Chetimari and Kargamari.
Mali situation: With the onset of the rainy season in Niger, mosquito nets have been distributed by the UNHCR office for Malian refugees in the 3 camps in the Tillabery region, whilst the Abala health center benefited from 480 nets.
