A. Situation analysis
Description of the disaster On 14 August at 21:58, a 5.3 earthquake (on the Richter scale, III-IV on the Mercalli Intensity Scale) struck Peru, affecting the province of Caylloma in particular. The epicentre was located at a depth of 8kmm some 10 km south-west of Chivay, Arequipa (coordinates: latitude - 15.64 and longitude - 71.68).
According to the Civil Defence Institute (INDECI) reports, the earthquake caused damage in the jurisdictions of Chivay, Achoma, Ichupampa, Cabanoconde, Yanque, Coporaque, Maca, Madrigal, Tapay and Lari. According to preliminary reports from 21 August 2016, 11,115 people have been affected, 158 homes collapsed, 1,173 were rendered uninhabitable, 1,277 suffered damages, 13 schools were affected, 67 people were injured and 4 people were killed.
The damage from the earthquake was mainly due to its ‘shallowness’, the geological fault, the type of housing (adobe, which made of mud and straw, and pirca, which is constructed of stone and mud) and the fact that many of these houses were old.
Near the access points, 5 km of main roads and 5.3 km of rural roads have been damaged by landslides, which are currently being repaired. In addition, 15.53 km of irrigation canals collapsed in the province of Caylloma, 21.09 km were damaged and 3 water heads were destroyed in the district of Ichupampa, affecting the availability of drinking water in the province.
On 16 August, the government declared a 60-day state of emergency in the districts of Chivay, Ichupampa, Achoma, Yanque, Maca, Madrigal and Coporaque in the province of Caylloma in the Arequipa region. That same day, the government launched a multi-sectorial plan aimed at providing an immediate response to the affected families.
