The situation
On 24 August 2016, 76 kilometres (47 miles) southeast from the city of Perugia, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy causing major damages and destruction of thousands of homes, buildings and infrastructures. On 8 September, the Italian Red Cross reported 296 people were killed in the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto. Approximately 4,454 people were displaced in the regions of Lazio, Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo as follows: (see chart)
The last missing person was found on 4 September and all rescue activities have concluded.
On September 7, the Civil Protection informed that 225 displaced people from Accumoli will be hosted in hotels in San Benedetto del Tronto in the Region of Marche. The staff from the Civil Defence and Lazio region are supporting the activity. On 8 September, the Civil Protection reported that 564 inspections are being carried out by technical experts on schools and public buildings in the municipalities affected by the earthquake. During the past ten days the technical experts are mainly focusing in assessing schools so students can resume classes as soon as possible.
In some cases, students will be able to attend classes in neighbouring towns. In Amatrice, the Civil Protection from the Province of Trento is preparing prefabricated modules that will host in 12 classrooms for kindergarten, elementary and middle schools.
In addition to schools, 84 public buildings have been checked: 57 are fit for use, 18 temporarily unusable either totally or partially. The Italian government has started to prepare for reconstruction
