Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone Ebola Situation Report, 08 July 2015

Highlights

  • In the week to 5 July 2015, there were 9 confirmed Ebola cases, up from 8 cases the previous week. Four cases reported from Kambia district came from four (Bramaia, Magbema, Samu and Tonkolimba) out of seven chiefdoms, three cases came from ward 374 in the Magazine Wharf area of Freetown (the only ward reporting cases out of the 48 wards in Western Area Urban district) and two cases were reported from Maforki and Masimera chiefdoms in Port Loko, a district with 11 chiefdoms.

  • Last week, UNICEF and partners reached 282 quarantined households with safe water. 199,500 litres of water were delivered to Kambia and Port Loko districts.

  • UNICEF and partners (CAWEC and Oxfam) constructed 19 household latrines for newly quarantined households in Kambia and Port Loko districts, benefiting 113 people.

  • Last week, 80 percent of schools in Kambia and 88 percent in Port Loko were observing the three compliance protocols i.e. cleaning of schools, screening temperature and hand washing. UNICEF is following up on the 15 percent non-compliant schools to provide support that includes orientation on use of thermometers and provision of hygiene supplies and thermometers.

  • Over 400 children received basic learning materials, supplementary reading and lesson notes to ensure continuity of learning while they are in quarantine.

  • UNICEF donated four Toyota Hilux vehicles to the Ministry of Social Welfare,
    Gender and Children’s Affairs as part of its support to the government for implementing the Sierra Leone Recovery and Transition Plan.

  • An ‘Ambulance Exhibit’ was held in Western Area as part of community engagement efforts to build people’s confidence in ambulance services. The exhibit engaged over 450 people.

  • UNICEF humanitarian action for children (HAC) is appealing for US $178 million for Sierra Leone to support the needs of children and communities affected by the Ebola crisis until the end of June 2015. Currently, UNICEF is revising its HAC appeal, in order to establish the funding needs until the end of 2015. As of 8 July 2015, US $121.6 million has been received.
