Guinea: UNICEF Guinea Ebola Situation Report, 14 July 2015

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The total number of confirmed cases of Ebola rose this week from 3,287 to 3,303, with 16 new confirmed cases, including 12 from Conakry, 3 in the prefecture of Forécariah, and 1 case in Fria (WHO, Ebola Situation Reports, Monday 6 July 2015- Monday 13 July 2015).

  • The number of confirmed deaths rose from 2,049 to 2,056 this past week, with a total count of 2,506 confirmed and probable deaths.

  • Strengthening surveillance in the border areas continued to be one of the top priorities. In partnership with the Scouts, 1,204 people were reached through mass sensitization at the harbor in Kamsar, in Boké, which is visited by fishermen from the islands bordering Guinea Bissau.

  • UNICEF continued social mobilization activities in Conakry, Boké, Coyah, Dubréka and Forécariah, the prefectures that have recently reported new Ebola cases, including door-to-door visits to 26,806 households.

  • UNICEF and partners distributed 13,392 household WASH kits and continued the rehabilitation of 145 boreholes, 66 of which have been completed in the last two weeks.

  • UNICEF and partners identified and registered 24 additional children (12 of whom were girls) who have lost one or both parents in Coyah, bringing the total number of registered orphans to 6,128.

  • 235,000 bars of soap were provided to Boffa Prefectural Direction for Education and Matam Conakry Communal Direction of Education for 223 schools in Boffa and 193 schools in Matam, for 119,393 children.

  • As a first step in a large-scale project with the Ministry of Transportation, a training of 700 trainers (TOT), who will in turn train animators responsible for registering all passengers, checking temperatures and ensuring hand-washing at Conakry’s major traffic junctions (bus stations, train stations and harbors).

  • Nutrition data collection, following the Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition (SMART) survey method, is ongoing nationwide, has now reached more than 80 per cent of expected households.
