Summary of WFP assistance:
In 2015, WFP's portfolio consists of five interventions, with a focus on improving the food security of the most vulnerable populations, particularly of women and children during the critical 1000 days window of opportunity, and providing emergency response in relief and recovery phases.
(i) Country Programme: will continue supporting government efforts towards implementation of the Zero Hunger Plan and Scaling Up Nutrition/1000 days actions, as well as the Competitiveness Pact, within the first National Development Strategy K’atun 2032. (ii) Regional Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO): responds to small and medium sized emergencies through emergency assistance to food insecure households affected by natural disasters and economic shocks. Other interventions include the regional capacity development project on emergency preparedness and response; and the Trust Fund 200542 within WFP’s Nutrition Capacity Strengthening Plan.
WFP contributes to MDG 1 by (i) providing supplementary feeding to children and pregnant women and nursing mothers in order to break the intergenerational cycle of chronic undernutrition; and (ii) by improving the livelihoods of subsistence farmers, and by supporting smallholder farmers' access to markets. In support of MDG 3, WFP’s interventions strengthen gender equality and women's empowerment. In order to achieve MDGs 4 and 5, food incentives help increase the health coverage of children and pregnant women and nursing mothers. To advance MDG 7, food assistance improves the food security situation of the most vulnerable households affected by crisis, while subsistence farmers improve their living conditions and livelihoods with environmentally friendly practices.
The country programme is aligned with WFP’s Strategic Objectives 3 and 4 of the Strategic Plan (2014–2017), and the regional PRRO with Strategic Objectives 1 and 2. WFP advocates for gender mainstreaming in all interventions and makes extensive efforts to ensure women’s participation. WFP also promotes the principles of equality, no discrimination, transparency and accountability among its implementing partners.
