Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • Most bio-physical indicators were within normal ranges

  • The vegetation condition index VCI-3month was 55.31 which was normal.

  • The state of water sources was normal at 4.

Production indicators

  • The milk production levels were above-average at 174 750-ml bottles compared to a long-term average of 88.1 Socio-Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • There were few reported cases of in-migrations of herders from Tanzania to areas of Ramisi and Vanga in search of pasture.

  • The livestock body condition is rated at 4 compared to 4-5 normally.
    Access indicators

  • The milk consumption was higher than normal since it was recorded at 84 750-ml bottles compared to a normal of 38.5 bottles.

Utilization indicators

  • The percentage of children at risk of malnutrition based on the MUAC was recorded at 6.4% which was slightly lower than the expected value of 6.74%.

Drought risks remain low similar to the previous month as most indicators have shown no unusual fluctuations outside their seasonal ranges. The off season rains will improve condition of browse and pasture and recharge waters sources. In some areas of Dzombo and Kikoneni in Msambweni sub county harvesting of maize has started and more areas are expected to harvest which will improve food security.
