Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • Environmental indicators show unusual fluctuations outside normal ranges. Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) for the month of July was 28.98 which is outside the normal range and exhibits moderate drought situation. Forage condition is fair in Agropastoral and poor in Pastoral livelihood zones.

  • The current state of water is at level 3 which is normal at this time of the year. 80% of surface water sources have dried up while the underground water source is yielding modest amounts of water.
    Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Livestock body condition is good to fair with a score of 5 which exhibits moderate smooth appearance.

  • There was usual migration of livestock from there normal settlements to grazing areas.

  • Children ‘at risk’ of malnutrition were 14.9% compared to the long term average of 17.9% which is within the normal range.

  • Terms of Trade are stable and favourable at 108 which are above normal at this particular time of the year.

  • Livestock diseases were reported.
