Dominica: Situation Report 1: Impact of Tropical Storm Erika on the island of Dominica, 27th August, 2015

SUMMARY

The fifth named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Erika formed on 24 August, 2015. Many of the Leeward Islands were placed under Tropical Storm Watch/Warning as the system approached the islands.

Reports indicate that Dominica was significantly impacted by Tropical Storm Erika bringing with it significant rainfall in the amount of approximately 9 inches in a period of 6 hours. It is important to note that no watches or warning were issued for Dominica as the system approached the island.

Officials in Dominica indicate that numerous landslides have occurred and several areas are flooded. Many homes along the river have been damaged/destroyed/flooded. Electricity is out in several areas and communication network is intermittent throughout the island. It has been reported that 25 or more persons may have died or are missing in the north-eastern and south-eastern areas of Dominica in areas identified as Good Hope, Bath Estate and Petite Savagne. The French Government has also received reports of 5 tourists missing. Three bodies have been recovered to date.
